Natural Cold Remedies: Food, Supplements, Herbs & Homeopathy That Help

This past fall, I had the opportunity to teach a new course at Western Connecticut State University on food as medicine, supplements, herbs, and homeopathy. Each section was taught individually, and at the end of the semester, my students and I created a natural remedy guide for common ailments—starting with the common cold.

Food as Medicine

What to Eat:

  • Bone broth – Rich in minerals; supports immune function and hydration

  • Chicken soup – Contains antimicrobial compounds (especially from onion and garlic)

  • Garlic – Offers natural antibiotic, antiviral, and antifungal effects

What to Avoid:

  • Processed foods & sugar – Sugar weakens the immune system and feeds harmful bacteria

Supplements That Help

  • Vitamin C – Immune booster that helps prevent and reduce severity of symptoms

  • Vitamin D – Plays a key role in immune regulation

  • Zinc gluconate – Clinical studies show it may shorten cold duration

  • Arabinogalactan powder – Supports the immune system and fights infection

  • N-acetyl L-cysteine (NAC) – Breaks up mucus and supports lung health

Homeopathy for Early Intervention

At the very first sign of a cold:

  • Aconite napellus – Useful for sudden-onset symptoms

Other options depending on symptoms:

  • Belladonna – Fever, flushed face

  • Kali bichromicum – Thick mucus

  • Pulsatilla – Mild, changeable symptoms, better with fresh air

  • Gelsemium – Fatigue, heaviness, slow onset
